FFA members play integral role in upcoming Farm Bill

What do crop subsidies, school lunches and water conservation all have in common? They are all part of the Farm Bill.
About every five years, Congress passes a bill commonly known as the “Farm Bill,” because it deals with food production, food safety, agricultural trade, food assistance and environmental concerns. Because of changing worldwide food needs, new technologies available, and changes in federal administration, the Farm Bill is under constant review, and many groups offer input on what should be included.

Learn more about corn, the foundation of the FFA emblem

Darryal Ray | 08/30/2011 |

You can eat it, fill your car’s gas tank with it or feed it to ol’ Bessie.

You can freeze it, can it or gnaw it right off the cob. You may even want to cook with it.

It is, of course, corn – the foundation of both American agriculture and the FFA emblem.

Turn That Down! How Earbuds Harm Your Hearing

You know how before the days of iPods and MP3 players, parents were always harping on their teens to turn down the music? Well, Mom and Dad may have been right.

MP3 players are causing hearing loss among young people, and the main culprit is the music’s high volume.

“Prolonged loud noise causes high-frequency hearing loss. Teenagers have a tendency to expose themselves to loud noises from iPods, MP3 players and other devices with headphones,” says Dr. Herbert Silverstein, president of the Silverstein Institute, a group of four ear, nose and throat specialists in Florida. “If played too loudly, the music from headphones causes increased vibration of the inner ear fluids, which in turn produces damage to the hair cells of the cochlea. The hair cells transmit sound to the hearing nerve and the brain, and when they’re damaged, they don’t function as well.”

Don't Stay Angry: 6 Ways To Resolve Conflicts

01/25/2010 |

There’s no avoiding it – now and then we all face conflicts. Whether within your FFA chapter, among your friends or in your own mind, conflict is a natural part of life. And the sooner you learn how to handle it, the better off you’ll be.

“Everyone has conflicts, no matter how smart or cool they are,” says Annie Stanfield-Hagert, a psychotherapist and social worker based in Philadelphia. “Smart people accept this, learn what they can about themselves, and then control how they act. It is hard to do, but it’s the secret of many successful people.”

Common conflicts with teens include external things such as physical and verbal fights among friends or arguments between teens and their parents. Inner conflicts are also common among teens – maybe you’re struggling to fit in, you don’t feel attractive enough, or you’re stressed about schoolwork or making college plans.
