Why do farmers farm?

Agriculture Online (www.agriculture.com) recently polled farmers to find out why they do what they do.

Their question, "What do you like most about farming?" received this response:

Independence: 55%
Growing things: 21%
Machinery & Tools: 9%
Nature: 5%
Other: 4%
Livestock: 3%
Financial rewards: 3%
